Led by versatile 6-foot senior Lindsay Flory, University High rallied to win the last two sets to take a 3-2 volleyball victory over Assumption on Tuesday night at U-High.

Flory had 17 kills and 15 assists as the Cubs prevailed 13-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-20 and 15-13.

University (9-4) has advanced to the playoff semifinals the past three seasons. Assumption (11-4) of Class 4A has won eight state volleyball titles.

“I thought we played a great match,” Assumption coach Sandy Fussell said. “We just let some points get away from us at the end. It was a great high school volleyball match. University’s serving kept us off balance and their blocking at the net was a factor.”

Flory, 6-3 senior Marygrace Constantin, junior Destiny Ephrom (11 blocks, six kills) and junior Terri Drake (eight kills, 12 assists, three blocks) provided the power at the net. Constantin, who played with an injured left wrist, had nine blocks and six kills.

Assumption dominated the first set. The other four sets were highly competitive.

“We didn’t pass well in the first set,” U-High coach Bonita Johnson said.

“I told the girls to relax and have fun. They started playing with confidence from there. Our passing improved, and we were able to attack. I think we’re going to continue to get better this season.”

Assumption led 7-1 in the second set. With Flory serving, University went on a 6-0 run to lead 11-8. Constantin had the game-winning block.

The tables turned in the third set as the Cubs raced to an 11-2 lead.

The Mustangs rallied to tie things at 18, 19 and 20. Kevreion Ward had two kills and Hannah Diggs had the game-winning hit down the stretch.

Ward (12 kills), Hannah Brister (17 kills, five aces) and Lorraine Baker (11 kills) helped fuel the Assumption attack. Sunni Rae Blanchard added 37 assists and Claire Landry 23 digs.

University tied the fourth set at 10 on a Drake kill. The set was tied six other times. Flory had a key ace down the stretch.

In the decisive fifth set, Assumption took an 11-10 lead on a kill by Brister. Flory’s kill pulled University within 13-11. A Flory’s block tied it at 13. Assumption had two hitting errors for the final margin.

“We made some errors down the stretch of the fifth set,” Fussell said.
