COVINGTON — All good things must come to an end.
The St. Paul’s basketball team had won 31 consecutive games, but the Wolves met their match in Tuesday’s Class 5A regional playoff game.
No. 13 East Ascension (29-6) ran out to a 13-point halftime lead and survived a late rally to escape with a 71-68 win over the fourth-seeded Wolves.
St. Paul’s (31-2) had a chance to take the lead with 6.4 seconds remaining. Trailing 69-68, the Wolves inbounded under their own basket, but EAHS’ Jimel London stole the ball and scored as the final buzzer sounded.
Le’Aaron Cain, who scored 14 first-quarter points, finished with 34 to lead the Spartans. Skyler Herbert topped St. Paul’s with 16 points.
PLAQUEMINE 60, NORTHSIDE 57: C.J. Young made four free throws in the final 25 seconds as the No. 9 Green Devils (24-6) came from behind to win a Class 4A contest at eighth-seeded Northside. Jonte Morrison’s hook shot had given Northside (23-10) a 57-56 lead with less than a minute to play.
Darius Randell led Northside with 27 points. Keandre Randell paced Plaquemine with 18.
EPISCOPAL 61, FERRIDAY 51: The fifth-seeded Knights (30-4) rallied from a 22-19 halftime deficit to defeat the No. 12 Trojans (19-8) at Episcopal. Episcopal turned the tables in the third quarter outscoring Ferriday 26-13.
Episcopal’s Chris Beckman, Jr. had 31 points including seven 3-pointers. For Ferriday, Ronald Williams scored 15 and Marquell Griffin had 11.
WOSSMAN 58, GLEN OAKS 52: The fourth-seeded Warriors (23-8) of Class 4A led most of the way as they won at No. 20 Glen Oaks. The Panthers (20-12) cut a nine-point halftime deficit to four entering the fourth quarter, but came up short.
Wossman’s Zach Smith made five 3-pointers on his way to 21 point. Glen Oaks was led by Brian Dundy (15) and Nick Cobb (10).
SOUTHERN LAB 68, CRESCENT CITY 50: The third-seeded Kittens (24-7) started slowly in their Class 1A contest with No. 14 Crescent City (19-11) at Southern Lab. The Kittens fell behind by seven in the first quarter but found their groove in the second quarter.
Lab outscored the Pioneers 41-16 in the second and third quarters, and cruised to a second round win.
PORT ALLEN 78, IOWA 67: The Pelicans, ninth-seeded in Class 3A, took control in overtime to score a hardfought win at No. 25 Iowa (19-11). The teams ended regulation tied 62-62 but Port Allen (20-11) outscored the Yellow Jackets 16-5 in the extra period.
Port Allen’s Nigel Allen scored 30 points while Jordan Morgan added 19. Iowa got 27 points from Janquise Frank and 22 by Isiah Richard.
Port Allen will host top-seeded Peabody in the quarterfinals.
MADISON PREP 60, NEWMAN 17: The No. 1 seeded Chargers ran away with their Class 2A contest against No. 16 Newman (15-12) at Madison Prep. MPA (31-4) held the Greenies scoreless in the second quarter, and outscored them 21-2 in the fourth quarter.
With 12 points, Josh Anderson was the only MPA player in double figures as 13 Chargers scored.
JEHOVAH-JIREH 58, GRAND ISLE 27: The sixth-seeded Warriors rode strong defensive play to a Class C win over Grand Isle at the Jehovah-Jireh. Trenton Payne led three Warriors in double figures with 18 points. Donald Johnson III scored 16, and Jaron Davis added 10.
