WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. — Notes and observations from Tuesday’s practice:

Tooned out: It wasn’t the best day for wide receiver Nick Toon. He dropped a pass, failed to reel in another, and had a third knocked away when he failed to shield off a defender. Toon appears to be in position to win a roster spot, but the competition is too tight there to have any down days.

Virgil vs. Mabry: I’ve mentioned Lawrence Virgil flashing a few times, but I think Ashaad Mabry is having a better overall camp. He’s performed well the last few days and appears to be in position to compete for a roster spot. He’s had a strong week.

Unheralded hype: The hype in these parts the last couple weeks has centered on Willie Snead. Someone else to keep an eye on is undrafted wide receiver R.J. Harris. He flashes great body control and made a solid adjustment to make a back-shoulder catch in the end zone today. These moments are becoming more common for him.

Defense steps up: There was no shortage of defensive highlights today. Over 54 plays, there were eight sacks and seven passes broken up. Kyle Wilson had two pass breakups. Kasim Edebali had two sacks.

More red-zone work and hurry-up offense: The Saints spent a lot of time working in the red zone and on their two-minute offense. The defense did a really good job in this area of the field and forced the quarterbacks to go deep into their progressions.

Powell struggles: Ronald Powell struggled a bit coming out of the backfield and was victim to the best block we’ve seen from Andrus Peat, who was back at tackle. It’s too soon to write him off, but Powell is going to need a big preseason to make the roster.

Under wraps: C.J. Spiller was no present at practice and Marques Colston watched from the sidelines. If I had to make list them for Thursday’s game against Baltimore, I’d put Spiller down as doubtful and Colston as questionable.
