Saints bring in 44 tryout players at rookie camp

The New Orleans Saints brought in 44 tryout players to go through five practices this weekend, including five veterans who have already gotten in some time in the NFL.

Pass rusher Matt Shaughnessy and defensive tackle C.J. Wilson have both had lengthy careers as rotational players.

Shaughnessy, who was drafted by Oakland and spent 2013 and 2014 with the Arizona Cardinals, has 18.5 sacks in his career, and he worked out for New Orleans at one point in 2015 after getting cut during training camp.

Wilson, who has 6.5 sacks in his career, spent four years with the Packers, one with the Raiders and then spent parts of 2015 in Oakland and Detroit.

New Orleans also brought in two veteran kickers, including long-time Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker Connor Barth and Nate Freese a former draft pick in Detroit who only kicked for the Lions for three games.

Rounding out the list is former Oklahoma offensive lineman Tyrus Thompson, a sixth-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings who was cut at the end of training camp and spent time with Jacksonville and Detroit, although he did not play in any games as a rookie.

New Orleans also had one more interesting story among its rookie, or first-year, tryout players. Tight end Eric Wallace played basketball at DePaul, graduated in 2012 and spent the last three years playing Australian rules football.
