Former Saints pass-rusher Will Smith has been released by the New England Patriots, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Smith was with the Saints from 2004 to 2013 and helped them win Super Bowl XLIV. He has the fourth-most career sacks (67.5) and third-most forced fumbles (20) in Saints history.

The Saints released Smith, 33, in February to clear cap space for a bevy of upcoming offseason transactions. He signed with New England in May after missing his last season with the Saints with a torn ACL.

Reports were that Smith at times looked out of place as a defensive end in a scheme with three down linemen and was mostly run at with success. In New Orleans, he had his most success as an end in a scheme with four down linemen.

Smith this preseason has two combined tackles (one solo) and one quarterback hit.
