If his words are taken seriously, Drew Brees should be back next season. After the loss he spoke about the window of opportunity for this team, referencing several times, and then was asked directly if he plans on being here moving forward. He replied by saying, “I do.”
Brees spent the entire offseason telling reporters that he planned to play out this season, focus on the task ahead and push any thoughts about the status of his contract until after the season.
Brees will become a free agent on the first day of the league year if he does not first reach an extension. His last contract extension included three voidable years at the end that existed to help spread out his signing bonus.
Unless something is done to push the hit further down the line, whether he is here or not, he is currently set to count as $18 million in dead money against next year's salary cap.
