New Orleans long snapper Justin Drescher is back to full speed after opening camp with a minor injury. Now that Drescher’s back, he met with the media to talk about him.

When you get hurt and another snapper comes in, are you concerned?

Absolutely. Every day we’re out here to compete and get better. It’s like I told (recently released rookie) Chris Highland: I said, ‘Hey, come in here and try to steal my job. You’re here for a reason. You’re a good snapper, and you got a lot better.’ If a guy beats me out because he’s better than me, hats off to the guy.

Have you ever been in a snapper battle?

Yes. I was here in 2011. They brought in the snapper from San Francisco, a guy named Kyle Nelson. I had a battle with him. That was going into my second year, so it was a great battle. he’s a great snapper, and he made the NFL.

What’s a snapper battle like?

The attitude I have is, I’m one of the best snappers, and if he comes in and beats me out, he beats me out. It’s like I told (Highland) when he got here in minicamp: ‘I’m going to give you what I’ve got; I’m going to pay it forward. I’m not going to mess with you or anything. I want you to be the best you can be, so I’m going to help you out,’ and I think I did that to the best of my capabilities.

When’s the last time you had a bad snap in a game?

Knock on wood here, but I think it was senior year of high school. I snapped one over the punter’s head. It didn’t lose (the) game for us, but it was a close game, and it was one of those things that I vowed would never happen again.

What’s it like working with Thomas Morstead?

I can’t say enough good things about him. He’s one of my best friends on the team. ... We know how to get under each other’s skin. We know what makes each other run, so during the game there might be some heated exchanges with us. But we know it’s all for a good cause.
