ROUND ROCK, Texas — Vinny Rottino had a home run and drove in three as the New Orleans Zephyrs defeated the Round Rock Express 7-4 at Dell Diamond on Sunday night.
The Zephyrs pounded 14 hits as six players had multi-hit games. Marcell Ozuna had a hit in his fifth consecutive contest — an upper-deck home run in the fourth inning.
Justin Nicolino (5-5) earned his first win as a Zephyr since May 23 against El Paso. He worked six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits.
The Zephyrs bullpen worked its way in and out of trouble as the Express stranded 12, including five in the final two innings. Z’s closer Nick Wittgren loaded the bases in the ninth with nobody out before getting two strikeouts and a fly ball to cap the win and land his 11th save.
The Z’s (42-48) head into the All-Star break with a losing record for the first time since 2011.
The Zephyrs will have two pitchers at the All-Star Game at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Papillion, Nebraska: Andre Rienzo and Wittgren are on the roster for the Pacific Coast League. The game will be televised on MLB Network and air on WMTI-FM, 106.1. ... The Miami Marlins promoted infielder Donovan Solano and optioned pitcher Adam Conley to the Zephyrs. ... The Zephyrs return home Thursday against Colorado Springs to open an eight-game homestand.
