MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Charlie Tilson’s run-scoring single brought home Alex Mejia with the game’s lone run in the seventh inning Tuesday as the Memphis Redbirds defeated the New Orleans Zephyrs 1-0 in the series opener at AutoZone Park.

Memphis’ Deck McGuire pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing six hits, as Memphis improved to 21-28. New Orleans’ Dylan Axelrod countered with five scoreless innings, but Greg Nappo took the loss in relief as the Zephyrs fell to 21-29.

The Zephyrs were shut out for the fourth time this season. The Zephyrs matched the 1993, 1999 and 2008 teams with just 10 wins in May. The Zephyrs finished the month 10-18.


The series continues at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday. The Z’s will start LHP Chris Narveson (1-1, 4.80 ERA) against Redbirds RHP Alex Reyes (0-0, 1.00) The game will be broadcast on WODT-AM, 1280.
