MEMPHIS — Peter Mooney drilled a sixth-inning home run on the day of the eclipse, but it was not enough as the Memphis Redbirds defeated the New Orleans Baby Cakes 5-1.
Tyler O’Neill was hit by a pitch, Aledmys Diaz walked and Patrick Wisdom hit his team-leading 29th home run of the season to give Memphis a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
Jack Flaherty pitched seven innings, allowed one run on six hits and earned his sixth win of the season. Keyvius Sampson allowed three runs and suffered the loss.
Memphis added a pair of runs in the seventh inning when Breyvic Valera hit a solo home run and Wisdom picked up an infield hit to score O’Neill.
New Orleans (51-75) has dropped eleven of sixteen meetings this season to the division champion Memphis Redbirds (84-45).
The Baby Cakes added pitcher Daniel Schlereth from Class AA Jacksonville.
The Baby Cakes continue the four-game series at 6:36 p.m. Tuesday in Memphis. New Orleans will start RHP Scott Copeland against RHP Kevin Herget.
