MEMPHIS — Tomas Telis homered and drove home three runs as the New Orleans Zephyrs defeated the Memphis Redbirds to snap a four-game skid Tuesday.
Veteran Jeremy Guthrie, 37, just signed Monday, pitched five innings and earned his first win as a Zephyr. He scattered seven hits and allowed four runs in the start.
The Redbirds were looking for the sweep of the series — their first sweep of the season. Memphis opened the game with a pair of first-inning runs. New Orleans answered scoring two runs in the second, third, and fourth innings to jump out to a 7-3 lead.
New Orleans held on as three relievers were needed to hold the Redbirds attack. Cody Ege pitched a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save of the season. Memphis out-hit the Zephyrs 11-8 in the game.
New Orleans promoted pitcher Jo Jo Reyes to Miami. ... The Zephyrs are 4-4 on their 12-game, 13-day road trip. ... After an off day Wednesday, the Zephyrs continue the trip in Colorado Springs on Thursday.
