Zephyrs-Chasers susp. rain

The final game of New Orleans’ four-game home series against Omaha on Sunday at Zephyr Field was suspended because of rain.

The game began at 1:05 p.m. but was stopped at 1:15 with one out in the bottom of the first inning with the score 0-0. Play did not resume. After showers increased, the game was called at 2:57 by umpire crew chief A.J. Johnson.

It is the fifth Zephyrs home game postponed or suspended this season. Three have been made up as part of doubleheaders, with another set for July 6 vs. Iowa.

The Storm Chasers do not return to Zephyr Field this season, so Sunday’s game will be resumed during the teams’ series in Omaha on July 1-3.

The Storm Chasers (32-31) won two of the three games played in the series. However, the Zephyrs (29-32) won Saturday night, 5-4 in 13 innings, on Isaac Galloway’s one-out, run-scoring single. New Orleans had rallied for two runs in the 12th to tie the score.

Hernandez to join Z’s

Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez, one of the top pitchers in Major League Baseball, is scheduled to join the Zephyrs and pitch on a rehab assignment Wednesday at Round Rock.

Fernandez, 22, had Tommy John surgery May 16, 2014. Recovery usually takes 12 to 18 months. On June 1, he was cleared to begin rehab assignments.

“He will throw 80 pitches or pitch six or seven innings,” Z’s manager Andy Haines said Sunday.

Wednesday will mark Fernandez’s third rehab start. Reportedly, he is to make five. However, after Round Rock on Wednesday, the Z’s are off for his next scheduled start, June 22, and the fifth would be June 27, but that’s at Iowa. Haines said he doubts Fernandez will make that trip. The Marlins plan to have him back in Miami to start against defending World Series champion San Francisco on July 2.

The Z’s finished 2-5 on their homestand. … Relief pitcher Fabian Williamson was sent to Double-A Jacksonville to make room for right-hander Kendry Flores, who was sent down from the Marlins. Flores will make his first start with the Z’s on Monday. Marlins starter Jarred Cosart will make his second rehab start Tuesday in Round Rock, followed by Fernandez on Wednesday. Adam Conley will pitch Thursday and Justin Nicolino on Friday. ... Haines said he has to figure out how to keep right-hander Andre Rienzo in the mix. Rienzo started Sunday’s game, but with the rain, threw just 16 pitches. … New Orleans is 4-7 against Omaha this season after going 11-5 against the Storm Chasers last season, their worst conference head-to-head record. The Z’s went 10-6 against Omaha in 2013, the Chasers’ second-worst conference head-to-head record. … This will be the Z’s first meeting against Round Rock this season. The teams play three games.
